Barton Malow Company, One of America’s Best Construction Management Firms

Barton Malow Company, One of America’s Best Construction Management Firms
Benjamin P. Morgan, Vice President, Barton Malow Company

Once upon a time, African-American men were once the core source for skilled and unskilled labor in America, constructing our buildings, roads, highways, and bridges. Today, that once strong position is a faded memory. However, hope prevails that America’s African-American youth see the light and move towards rewarding careers in construction, building, energy and water utility skilled trades. America needs us to take the next step!

In this weekly publication of MWMCA’s e-newsletter, we are proud to salute Benjamin Morgan, an African American leader who took the next step and is leading a regional office of Barton Malow Company, one of America’s best construction management firms. Since 2014, Benjamin Morgan has been the Vice President of Barton Malow Company’s Greater Baltimore regional office, and to our knowledge, is the only African American in the DMW to hold such a distinction with a prime construction firm. Ben, as he is referred to by many, started thirty years ago as an engineer’s aid and augmented that with an undergraduate degree in civil engineering followed by a Master of Science in Construction Management, all of which prepared him for his leadership role today.

Ben also gives back to our community through his faith in divinity and his work at Morgan State University’s School of Construction Management, where he serves as an adjunct professor and chair of the advisory committee. In fact, Barton Malow Company has hired five Morgan State University graduates over the years as well.

Both, Ben and Barton Malow Company believe in social economic inclusion and have entered in several teaming and/or joint ventures with minority-owned construction management firms proving that these ventures work and are beneficial to both parties. Their most recent joint venture includes a large multimillion-dollar Morgan State University project with JLN Construction Services, LLC, a minority-owned firm. To date, MWMCA has never encountered any minority or women-owned firms in dispute with Barton Malow Company over work, change orders or payment.

Kim McCalla, Associate Vice President of Facilities, Design and Construction, at Morgan State University has this to say, “Ben Morgan has been and continues to be a caring and involved executive from Barton Malow with everything he is associated, particularly here at Morgan. He cares about the project, the people, the workers and the students alike. He is willing to disseminate information to allow for others to advance and succeed. Ben and the team take great pride in their work here at Morgan. We are fortunate to have him as the leader of his teams.”

Namdi Iwuoha, Owner and CEO of JLN Construction Services, LLC said, “Ben Morgan and Barton Malow constantly provides my company with an opportunity to advance our construction management knowledge and skill. I don’t believe they are required to do it but do it because it builds strength and character for my company and project management team. I could not ask for a better partner.”

Wayne R. Frazier, President of MWMCA, has observed Ben Morgan over the years and has this to say, “Ben Morgan, is a tall, dark, and handsome leader. I’m proud of his humble beginnings and through diligent hard work and education he has evolved into the leader he is today. Barton Marlow is very fortunate to have Ben and likewise for Ben. However, Ben needs to be cloned throughout America’s construction industry.”

In closing, Barton Malow has taken the next step in hiring African American professionals and providing them with knowledge, skill, and experience to lead their company into the future.
