Project Description:
RiverRenew is the largest infrastructure initiative in the history of Alexandria, addressing a 2017 Virginia law to achieve healthier waterways by July 1, 2025. The Work generally consist of the construction of 4 deep shafts, a waterfront tunnel approximately 2 miles long, a near surface interceptor along Hooff’s Run, and a tunnel dewatering and wet weather pumping station. The tunnel system will capture millions of gallons of combined sewage from four outfalls for transport to the Tunnel Dewatering and Wet Weather Pumping Station at AlexRenew, where it will be treated and cleaned prior to returning to the Potomac River. The project’s objective is to separate the existing combined water & sewage system which sends sewer overflow into the Potomac River polluting it during heavy rainfall.
The major elements of the project include tunneling, earthwork, concrete, trucking, miscellaneous metals, asphalt and concrete paving, striping, landscaping and wetland restoration, as well as numerous finish trades within the Tunnel Dewatering and Wet Weather Pumping Station.
