Schuster Concrete Construction Builds Futures for Young Adults in Baltimore

The 2018 class of Schuster Concrete Construction Apprenticeship and Training Program just completed 18 weeks of classroom instruction and are now hard at work this summer. Two classes are in session now and the 2019 class will start to accept applications in January 2019. “Schuster Concrete Construction is the only major concrete construction company in Greater Baltimore with an apprenticeship and training program that shows they care about the industry’s future. They are the best concrete construction company!”, said Wayne R. Frazier, Sr., President, Md. Washington Minority Companies Association (MWMCA).

The Schuster Concrete Construction Apprenticeship and Training Program is an example of the company’s commitment to enhancing the viability and sustainability of our local communities. As a State approved apprenticeship program, participants receive a combination of on-the-job training and classroom instruction under the supervision of a journey-level craft person or trade professional. Participants who successfully complete the program will receive a nationally recognized credential.

Their current apprenticeship position is Construction Craft Laborer. These laborers preform task involving physical labor on heavy construction projects. During this two-year program, apprentices take courses in OSHA Safety Training, Blueprint Reading, Site Layout, Forklift Operations, and Rigging. During training, apprentices receive an hourly wage and benefits.

Candidates are not required to have previous construction experience. However, they must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED, be physically capable to perform job task, able to pass a basic math test, and pass drug screening.

“We are not only building buildings, we are building futures for the young people in Baltimore” said Ross Jackson, Vice President of Safety and Minority Affairs of Schuster Concrete Construction.
