The new Hyattsville Area Elementary School will be a highly sustainable school consisting of pre-Kindergarten through sixth grade classrooms, special education classrooms, gymnasium, music rooms, cafeteria multi-purpose room, a media center, administrative spaces, exterior courtyards, playfields, and parking. The building consists of an approximately 92,000sf split two story building. An NFPA 13 sprinkler system will be utilized. The building will be constructed as a structural steel frame with non-load bearing masonry back up walls and a mixture of brick veneer, CMU veneer, and metal panel system. The school will be designed to the LEED Gold criteria. Some of the sustainable features include a geothermal heating and cooling system, environmentally friendly storm water design, vegetated roofs, large glazed openings for day lighting of spaces, rainwater harvesting, and regional materials. The MBE goal is 30% for this project to be achieved by MDot Certified Minority Business Enterprises. This project is subject to Prevailing Wage Rates.
